Ölüm ve yaşam arasındaki sınırın incecik olduğu bu köye yaptıkları yolculuk, kendi ilişkileri için de bir dönüm noktası olacaktır.
The turmoil of two mismatched lovers is set against the backdrop of social unrest in the latest cinematic adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham’s classic novel The Painted Veil. The couple, Walter (Edward Norton) and Kitty Fane (Naomi Watts), make a quick match in London before setting up housekeeping in Shanghai, where Walter, a doctor, is working as a bacteriologist.
Norton plays Walter with a perfectly pitched reserve that expands but never quite breaks as the character confronts his wife’s affair with a fellow ex-pat (played by Watts’ real life boyfriend, Liev Schreiber). Walter met Kitty at a party and fell in love with her on sight, but the audience can see that she is self-absorbed and the tryst isn’t surprising.
It’s the remedy Walter proposes that raises eyebrows. He will either give her a divorce and effectively make her a social pariah, or she will have to follow him into a sort of purgatory-he’s decided to take a post in the north of the country where there’s been a cholera outbreak and she must accompany him. It seems that here she will either die or atone for her sins. Or both.
Kitty follows the stoic Walter across the country-a China populated with steep peaks and waving fields, peasants and colonialists, disease and civic unrest. Shot in a remote part of the Guangxi Province, the tremendously beautiful landscape has a deceptively listless quality that belies the effort required to live and travel in this land.
The epicenter of the outbreak is the town of Mei-tan-fu and as the couple settles into their new home, it’s unclear who Walter is punishing more-Kitty or himself. More scientist than doctor of bedside mannerly persuasion, Walter is immediately immersed in the world of the dying where microscopes offer no escape from the messiness of death via cholera. His efforts to stop the spread of the disease are hampered by increasing discontent with Western influence in the region. Meanwhile, an increasingly bored Kitty is left at home to stew, with a bumbling bodyguard (thanks to aforementioned discontent).
The Fanes’ only neighbor is a disheveled Brit named Waddington (Toby Jones).. And oddly enough, as he is an odd man, it’s Waddington who provides the catalyst via the right words at the right moments, to propel Kitty out of her delusions regarding who and what is of value. He gets some help from the local Mother Superior (Diana Rigg) who gives a speech that is both lovely and devastating about her own marriage to God.
There is much about the love story in The Painted Veil that is awkward and offends our modern sensibilities. While touchingly earnest, Walter’s immediate affection for Kitty in London seems naïve at best and arrogant at worst. And the narrow social conventions guiding Kitty’s ideas and choices regarding marriage (as, by extrapolation, the role and worth of women in society) are painful given their proximity to our own day. But I confess I’m a bit of a sucker for love stories that start after the wedding.
In Mei-tan-fu, a love isn’t revived-a love is forged. Neither Walter nor Kitty is a saint, and neither becomes one. But the audience does get to see a love of virtue take root in this relationship as Kitty stumbles towards a kind of redemption from her flapper-y preoccupation with the flashiest (and easiest) sorts of passions. And the process raises the specter of how the tangible circumstances of our lives-in this case a confrontation with disease and oppression-have a very real bearing on the intangible state of our hearts and minds. The Kitty Fane who was given a divorce-or-else ultimatum could never have imagined anything good coming from such a confrontation. But the Kitty Fane who runs into her former lover on the streets of London at the end of the movie knows that in Mei-tan-fu, she found a sort of salvation.

With Crystal Planet, Joe Satriani made an effective return to his signature sound following the erratic blues-rock detour of Joe Satriani. For the follow-up to Crystal Planet, Satriani is once again exploring novel territory in an effort to keep his music fresh, and Engines of Creation is the biggest stylistic shift he’s made yet — to electronic music. Satriani’s guitar is still the focal point of the music, to be sure, but while his virtuosity is obvious, it’s often submerged in the new demands of this musical idiom. That isn’t a surprise either, given that Satriani is one of the few guitar shredders whose taste and musicality have never been in question. But fans who simply want to hear him rip through his typical jaw-dropping solos may be disappointed (even though, in the end, there are more than a few solos), as will those guitar fans who reflexively disdain all sounds electronic. Having defended it, though, Engines of Creation isn’t a total success. While the music is certainly influenced by techno and electronica, it probably won’t appeal to listeners coming from those arenas; overall, it simply isn’t as adventurous as much genuine electronica, avoiding complex backing rhythms or edgy sonic textures; nor is it as hypnotic, meandering or drifting aimlessly at times instead of moving into trancelike states of consciousness. Plus, Satriani’s songs are often more traditional than they may seem upon first listen; many of the compositions are based on repeated themes and riffs and standard rock-song structures, switching between recurring, identifiable sections rather than gradually building and unfolding. However, the album can also be quite inventive. Satriani has challenged himself to find ways of coaxing totally new sounds from his guitar, and he weaves them seamlessly into the futuristic electronic soundscapes. Moreover, his melodies and main themes have rarely been this angular and off-kilter, meaning that exploring this music has indeed helped Satriani refresh and re-imagine his signature sound. Even the pieces that aren’t ultimately that revolutionary are still intriguing, since very few musicians have the technical training and innate sense of musicality required to mine this territory. Overall, Engines of Creation is a brave and sporadically successful experiment, and it’s also a promising new direction for Satriani should he choose to continue this vein of exploration and take it out even farther.

75 kilometre Irak\’a girme hakkı
\’İki İçişleri Bakanı arasında imzalanan güvenlik anlaşmasında yer alan bir madde 1926 anlaşmasına atıfta bulunuyor ve Irak petrollerinin yüzde 10\’unun Türkiye\’ye verilmesini öngörüyor. Petrolün yüzde 10\’unu Türkiye verme aşamasında mıdır? Neyse ki bu anlaşmaya İçişleri Bakanı\’nın imza yetkisi yok. Hatta Başbakan\’ın bile imza yetkisi yok. Irak parlamentosunun bu anlaşmayı onaylaması gerekir. Nasıl oluyor da, Irak\’tan bir heyet başka bir ülkeye gidip anlaşma imzalıyor ve bu heyette hiçbir Kürt yetkili yok.\’
Ankara ile Bağdat her konuda anlaşmıştı. K. Irak yönetimi anlaşmayı boşa çıkardı. Ankara\’da öfke daha da büyüdü.
Peki Ankara Anlaşması\’nda neler var ve neden şimdi yeniden gündeme geldi? 5 Haziran 1926\’da Türkiye ile İngiltere arasında imzalanan, Türkiye-Irak sınırını belirleyen, petrol gelirlerinin yüzde 10\’unu 25 yıllık bir süre için Türkiye\’ye veren anlaşmada bugün sorunlarına çözüm olacak ilginç düzenlemeler var. 18 maddelik anlaşmanın bir çok maddesinde, Türkiye ve Irak\’a topraklarında birbirine yönelen tehditlere konusunda ağır sorumluluklar yüklüyor. Her iki taraf da, sınırdan 75 kilometre içerideki bölgede, komşusunu rahatsız edecek her kalkışmayı önlemek, sorumluları teslim etmek, işbirliği yapmak zorunda. Yine anlaşmaya göre, bu 75 kilometrelik derinlikte Bağdat ve Ankara dışında hiçbir güce temsil hakkı tanınmıyor. Mesela Irak sınırından 75 kilometre içerideki güçler, Türkiye\’ye karşı zarar verici hareketlere girerse, Bağdat bunu önleyecek, önleyemezse işbirliği yapacak. Ve en önemlisi de, bu 75 kilometre içindeki hiçbir güç muhatap alınmayacak, görüşme bile yapılmayacak. Petrol konusu 14. maddede düzenleniyor. 25 yıl süre ile Irak petrollerinin yüzde onu Türkiye\’ye veriliyor.
Barzani\’yi endişelendiren nokta burası. Hem petrol konusunda hem de Bağdat dışında hiçbir otoritenin muhatap alınmaması konusunda bir Ankara Anlaşması var . Birkaç hafta önce iki başkent arasında imzalanan Güvenlik Anlaşması\’nın kaynağı yine 1926 tarihli Ankara Anlaşması. Güvenlik anlaşmasında açıkça 1926\’ya atıfta bulunuluyor.
Taraflar bu anlaşmayı bugün bile onaylıyor. Onaylamayan Barzani. Çünkü Kürt yönetimini tamamen boşa çıkarıyor. Dahası, Irak topraklarının 75 kilometre derinliğine kadar Türkiye\’yi müdahale hakkı veriyor. Devam edelim:

Başbakan Tayip Erdoğan\’ın son İngiltere ziyaretinde bir anlaşma imzalandı: Stratejik Ortaklık Anlaşması . Çok değişik konularda düzenlemeler içeren anlaşma Irak\’la ilgili önemli ortaklıkları düzenliyor. Bir nevi 1926 Anlaşması\’nın bugüne taşınmış hali gibi. Çok önemli ve ciddi sonuçlar doğuracak bir anlaşma. Türkiye ile İngiltere, 1926\’da olduğu gibi yine Irak\’ın geleceğini belirleyecek iki garantör ülke pozisyonu alıyor. Türk medyası bunu iyi algılayamadı. Barzani de tam anlayamamış olacak ki, sesi çıkmadı. Yakında çıkaracaktır ama.
Başbakan\’ın 5 Kasım\’daki ABD ziyaretinde de benzer bir anlaşma imzalanabilir. Türkiye\’yi teskin edecek tek yol bu. Böyle bir anlaşma İngiltere\’den sonra ABD ile de imzalanırsa Türkiye, İngiltere, ABD ve merkezi Bağdat yönetimi arasında ciddi bir koordinasyon oluşacak. ABD, benzer bir anlaşmaya yanaşmazsa, ikili ilişkiler ciddi yara alır. O zaman Irak\’ın kuruluş anlaşmasındaki taraflara geri dönülür. Böylece, PKK da, K. Irak\’tan kaynaklanan tehdit de, enerji ile ilgili talepler de bu koordinasyon tarafından şekillendirilecek.
Türkiye\’nin askeri hazırlığı, siyasi sessizliği, kartlarını gizli oynaması bu sebeple olabilir mi? Sorry for the inconvenience. ” Well, then about 15 minutes later, the captain comes on again. “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m afraid I have some more bad news. We just lost another engine. Since we already dumped the luggage, we will now have to drop people. You will be given floating devices and will be picked up immediately by a boat and taken safely to shore. To be fair, we will do this in alphabetical order. ‘A’ is for African American. All African Americans, please raise your hands.” Well, hearing this, the little black boy started to raise his hand. His father pushed his hand down and said, “No son, keep it down!” When no one raised their hands, the captain said, “Okay, fine, let’s move on to the letter ‘B’. ‘B’ is for black. All blacks, raise your hands.” Again, the little black boy starts to raise his hand, and his father stops him again. The captain comes on once more, and says, “Well then, I guess we’ll move on to C. ‘C’ is for Colored. All colored people, raise your hands.” The little black boy starts to raise his hand, and his father pushes it down and tells him no. “But dad!” he says, “We are African American, we are black, and we are also called colored. Why won’t you let me raise my hand?” His father says, “No son, today, we’re niggers. Those damn Jews and Mexicans are going before us!”
